Do Not Get A Bad Tattoo

Tattoos are a life-time commitment.

If you are planning on getting a tattoo, just keep this in mind, that tattoo will be on your skin for the rest of your life.
Deciding on what tattoo is just as important as where on your body to put it, plan ahead before getting a tattoo and only from a reputable tattoo artist, and not from your mate who just brought his first tattoo machine.
They are called tattoo artists because the work they do is art and they are masters at their trade.
Here are some examples of bad tattoos.

I Wanna Be A Super Model.

Really?! Really.
I would quit my day job in a hot second if I received the phone call asking me to come and walk in some shows...or pose in a catalougue (hello Victoria's Secret) or magazine advertisement. I'm secretly obsessed with the world of models and even pretend that I'm one when I walk the streets of New York. As soon as I walk out my front door, I imagine that I'm about to walk the runway of the Zac Posen show and all of the top fashion editors are in the front row watching my every move. The media awaits me at the end of the runway to take shots of my outfit and Andre Leon Talley elbows Anna Wintour to comment on what an amazing walk I have and who is that fabulous girl?!
And then I almost walk into a pile of dog poop and my dream bubble has burst.
In reality, there's the loud drilling noises coming from the condos going up both next door and behind my apartment building (I can't remember the last time I really used my alarm clock), the cat calls from both the construction workers and the men running the automotive repair shop across the street (which I'm honestly convinced is actually just a chop shop) and the Tejano music blasting from the 24 hour laundry mat across the street (which, BTW isn't really open 24 hours but for some reason they haven't taken down the sign that says it is).
Also, nowhere within my dream bubble exists the fact that I have to sprint to the bus because I'm always and forever running late.
So, for now, I'm ok with attending Fashion Week shows and hanging out with the models backstage...and using the streets of New York as my catwalk.
You better work!

A model named Hollis taking a second to pose for my camera before getting her makeup done before the Nanette Lepore show. We were avidly discussing hair and she confessed that she always brings her own extensions and hair tools saying that she's seen too many models who have no edges due to the wear and tear of Fashion Week.
"If you don't look out for your own hair, no one else will," she said.

Exhibit A: I found this pic online of Naomi Campbell pushing back her hair only to reveal that she has no edges.

If were to walk in the Nanette Lepore show, I would have loved to rock this frock!

This Nanette Lepore frock comes in a close second in my book as a favorite compared to the one pictured above.

The designer gave all the models who walked in her show these swag bags. Right after I took this picture, I tried to sneak a peek to see the inside and looked up only to notice a lady with a headset giving me a nasty look. So, I ducked behind another rack of clothes before she could come chastise me. It's always important to avoid those with head sets when backstage.....

A model backstage waiting to get her hair done at the Christian Siriano show. At first, I was looking at her like why is she a model? And then I asked to take a shot of her and she quickly made this face. Fierce. And that's why she's a model.

And then Selita Ebanks walks in backstage at the Christian Siriano show and plops down to get her makeup done (makeup was done by Victoria's Secret beauty and she was one of the models in the show) wearing those Balenciaga sandals from the Spring/Summer 2008 collection....can we say jealous?! Yes, I was. I completely forgot about covering her makeup look and instead lusted after those shoes.

Some staffers pushed me out of the way to remove them. See, models don't even have to take their own shoes off!

One of the models getting 'greased up' backstage at the Baby Phat show. Ok, it wasn't grease, more like body oil.

Models backstage at the Baby Phat show.

This model was practicing her walk backstage at the Baby Phat show before it started....or maybe she was adjusting to the super high heels on her feet? I just couldn't get over her long, elegant legs. So I asked to take a pic with her (which she obligingly did). I consoled myself while standing next to her with the thoughts that I could TOTALLY walk in this show if I were only wearing short shorts and 8 inch pumps....

MAC Attack.

Reason number four million eight hundred and seventy three of why I love MAC: they came up with the fabulous idea to host a backstage beauty lounge during the Spring/Summer 09 Fashion Week here in NY.
Genius, I tell you…pure genius.
For beauty editors, it’s all about getting the scoop on the backstage look: the hair, the makeup, the application tips and the tools used. And you’ll do whatever means necessary in order to get this job done...which means that you’re usually entering the backstage area amidst the crowds of media and models.
Then, after identifying who the head makeup artist and hairstylist are, you must wedge yourself into that small space in-between said artists’ elbow and the person with the huge video camera next to them in order to get the scoop.
And, of course, you have 2.5 seconds to do this (especially if it’s a really big show, like Marc Jacobs, who may just come over and declare the look “horrible, I need more nude!” which then puts said artist, along with the rest of the team, into a frenzy and the guy next to you with the huge camera quickly swings it around to get more of Marc, almost wacking you in the head in the process…I mean, hello? Am I standing here? Do I exist?!) so you’re usually shouting out questions over the loud hum of a blow dryer while trying not to gag on the hairspray that he/she is using to seal in a style.
There are usually just 2 main questions that you need answered: what is the inspiration behind the look and what key products are you using to create it.
Everything else that you can get after that is just bonus material. Like sometimes they’ll tell you special techniques they used to get the perfect smudgey, smokey eye.
This season, I can honestly say that MAC made the whole process much easier by not only hosting the lounge, but by also being accessible to escort you straight to the person you need to talk to and making sure that ALL of your questions were answered. (The scary video cameras were nowhere near my skull this time!)
And because of the lounge, you no longer had to check in backstage with the pretentious backstage access list checkers. (I mean, no offense to people just trying to do their jobs, but one thing I LOATHED about covering backstage hair/makeup were these young girls in their all-black H&M dresses and too big borrowed designer heels, giving me that snooty ‘Who are you?’ look when I specifically just said that I was media…I mean seriously, please don’t hate on me just because you’re stuck back here while I get to actually SEE the show! Ugh.)
You would just flash your MAC pass, go straight to the lounge and check in with the amazing, super friendly Amelia who would then look on the list to find out who your escort was to be for that particular show. And if you had to wait, no problem! A MAC makeup artist would be there to provide all of your makeup touchup needs...which was great when you were too exhausted to put on much makeup that morning or if you were heading out to an afterparty after covering one of the evening shows! And there were always other beauty editors there to talk with…so you were never bored.
In the words of my boss, it was “Just fabulous!”

Head makeup artist for the Herve Leger show, Val Garland. "I can't live without eyeliner," she raved backstage.

"We used no foundation, powder or blush and a bit of lip conditioner on the lips" Garland said. "The look is very clean, with a little bit of sheen."

A makeup artist uses a Q-Tip after applying eyeliner backstage at the Herve Leger show.
"We wanted the focus to be on the eyes," Garland said. Garland and her team were applying black eye liner and then used a Q-Tip saturated with makeup remover to take off some of it. After noticing the perfect black lines, Garland said she knew that was the look they were going for. "It's very clean liner with no smoke to it," she said. "We wanted the look to be ultimately minimalist, just like the clothes in the collection."

Let's Hear It For The Boys! Part Two

Next up? The MOST SWAGGERFUL award goes to none other than Mr. West. He's cocky, confident and any grown man that walks around with bookbags and teddy bears doesn't care what you think about him...and isn't that what we find so appealing? In an era where individuality often meets criticism and scrutiny, West's one-of-a-kind, over-the-top style is edgy, brash and unapologetic...and we love him for it.

From the dashing black, white and red suit he wore to the VMA's to the Cornel West meets Urkel meets Diddy look at the Thakoon show, it's clear Kanye loves Fashion. And no matter what other rappers say (I'm talking to you Sigel!), he's not afraid to show it (on his scalp, see below).

Photobucket

Strange, maybe even crazy, but you have to respect his boldness! Wonder what Karl Lagerfeld had to say...

Photobucket

Smart and sharp at the Thakoon show.

And it doesn't hurt to have designing beauty, Alexis Phifer, on his arm either (btw, I think Ghita is adorable). Now if only we'd get a preview of that Pastel line Ye keeps talking about...

Runner-Ups:

T.I. for his extraordinary swag, but T.I.P.'s gotta go...

Photobucket

Jay-Z...so tall and lanky, his suit should thank him! But in the words of my friend Jey, you CAN wear skinny jeans because your debit card fits...

More awards (and sexy pics) on the way...

Let's Hear It For The Boys!

Call me old school, but nothing is better than a man with style. Most young people hear the word style in reference to a man, and immediately think homosexual. In other words, he dresses better than his girl because he really wants to be a girl. Hence, the flack my good friend (in my head) Kanye and Pharrell get for simply...matching. So in the same way that doing well in school has become "white," things like dressing up, coordinating and ironing are now "gay." (Please don't get me started...actually, nevermind, I'm talking about it...)

Along with the demise of hip hop has come the nosedive of fashion for young men. Trust me when I say I love rap, live for it, and even adore the 106andpark culture in a let-me-show-you-the-right-path kind of way. But what I can't condone? Crisp fitteds with the sticker on the brim, baggy pants (leave it in the '90's boo), anything and everything connected to bling and above all, shorts and Timbs (admit it, they hurt your feet! and I know your toes are sweating something terrible in the summertime). You're scared to wear flip-flops even at the beach (huh?) and when you put on suits (in a bright, ole ignorant color...like green), you have to add canes, pimp cups, matching alligator shoes, gawdy jewelry, a tear is falling down my cheek as I type this. But I write all this to say a confident, sharply dressed, well put together, sweet-smelling man is a rare find nowadays. So those who come along and have the courage and the swag to break from the pack, should be honored.

That said, the DAPPER RAPPER award goes to the distinguished, ubertalented Andre 3000 who singlehandedly made 2009 the year of the gentleman. His style is 30's English meets 00's eclectic. Yes, he's preppy and polished but he's also supercool and well, crazy. Whether in tomato red fur and green fringe or a smart fedora, waistcoat and worn-in riding boots, he's a hip hopper's dream: he experiments and innovates while paying homage to the classics.

Benjamin Bixby is the birthchild of Andre's crisp, classic, crazycool swag. It's a Britain/Collegiate/American Football/Late 30's inspired line of varsity sweaters, checked knickers and cropped jeans. It's moderately priced and available at Harrod's in London and Barney's New York. Glamazons, perfect Xmas gift for your man...every lady deserves a gentleman.

Ludacris for cleaning up like it's Easter morning...but what about every other day?

But he is looking kinda fine though...

Anyway, more awards to come.
